On Location: 10 Things to Look for While Location Scouting

Choosing the ideal location for filming is crucial for a smooth and successful video production. From camera placement to power sources, each detail can significantly impact the quality and efficiency of the shoot.

As a video production agency in Chicago, we know from experience that no two projects are alike. This is why we tailor our approach to each project’s specifications. Whether we are creating an explainer, promotional, corporate, or social  video, it is essential that the location suits our needs.

In this post, we will explore ten key elements to consider when scouting a location for your next project:

1. Camera Placement

Bring your cameraman or take photos to share with them. Look for places where tripods can be set up, assess the space for potential camera movement, and evaluate the visual appeal of the background.

2. Lighting

Assess the balance between natural light and the need for additional lighting. You can utilize apps like Sun Tracker AR to predict how sunlight might affect the set at a specific time of day.

3. Power

Check the number and locations of electrical outlets. Verify that the venue’s power system can handle your equipment’s electrical load.

4. Storage

Ensure there’s a secure area for storing equipment and make sure it’s easily accessible during production.

5. Loading Docks

Confirm the loading dock is close to the production area. To avoid conflicts on the day of your shoot, be sure to coordinate access times.

6. Audio

Determine the best locations to capture clear audio, remembering to consider ambient sound (elevator dings, common area chatter, street noise, etc.). If applicable to your production, check the venue’s existing PA system.

7. Staging

Consider how you can best arrange your cameras and talent in a given space. Factor in light sources, backdrops, and space for your crew and equipment. Look for furniture that can be easily moved or reconfigured as needed.

8. Internet

Assess the internet bandwidth speed. Determine if you need a wired connection or if WiFi suffices.

9. Cable Runs

Plan how you can route your cables to minimize tripping hazards and ensure neatness.

10. Space for Talent

Identify a room or area to serve as “home base” for your talent, a space for them to relax or freshen up.  Verify that it is easily accessible and contains all necessary facilities.

By thoroughly assessing your location for the necessary features, you can set the stage for a seamless production experience. Taking the time to ensure that your location meets your needs will not only streamline your production but also enhance the overall quality of your project. Happy scouting!
